The body is the medium for all human experience. It communicates to us in the language of sensation, tension, relaxation, movement, gesture, posture, and flow of qi. This language of the body can yield a wealth of information about our physiological, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing. Symptoms are the body’s way of getting our attention. Rather than analyzing symptoms intellectually, we will learn to explore body experience directly. This involves distinguishing thinking from sensation and directing our patients’ awareness away from thoughts and toward their kinesthetic experience. By staying with and exploring direct bodily experience, underlying emotions, patterns and lifestyle choices emerge. Both practitioner and patient then have a greater understanding of internal dynamics, and the next steps toward health, contentment, and wholeness.
